I was in the pub this evening having a quiet drink with a friend, Simon. I was describing to him how I’d spent the previous week experimenting with two programming languages, Go and Rust. I told Simon that I’d had fun learning but, no matter what the advantages of modernity brought to these languages, I still found myself drawn back to C for my own projects.

With a serious expression Simon — who, four years ago, retired after a twenty-year programming career at IBM — looked me in the eye and exclaimed, “you are such a geek!”

“No I’m not,” I protested, feigning offence, “this stuff just fascinates me.”

“Geek,” he said, nodding.

When I eventually returned home, I opened the door and saw this:

Apple MacBook Pro, adorned with geeky stickers.

Then, from the other side of the machine, the first thing I saw after logging in was this:

iTerm terminal emulator software, with three windowed sessions in progress

I grinned and thought to myself, “I’m such a geek.”
